Biography of Alexander "Sandy" Cameron (1847-1934) |
|
|
Alexander "Sandy" Cameron was
born on February 14, 1847 at Tealaggan (Tealagan), in Kirkhill Parish,
Inverness-shire, Scotland, to John Cameron
and Isabella Dallas.
In or around 1855 he joined his parents and siblings in making the journey from Scotland to Canada, where they initially settled in Cobourg, Ontario. The Cameron family resided in Cobourg for a few years, but in 1863 moved further west, to homestead in Bruce County, Ontario. As a young man he made his way to Manitoba, to take up a homestead, as had some of his brothers. Sandy pioneered in Cypress River. After residing there for approximately 30 years, he moved to a home in Fork River, around 1904. In business, Sandy was active in land speculation and grain brokering. Though not a veterinary surgeon, his skill in treating livestock disease made him an indispensable member of the local community. Sandy married three times, with his first two wives both passing away at a young age. Fate was much kinder with him during his third marriage, to Charlotte Mullen, in 1906. They would enjoy 26 years together before her passing on in 1932. They had one son, Alexander, Jr. The family moved back to Cypress River in 1918, where they stayed until about 1930, when they – once again – settled in Fork River. On October 12, 1934 Sandy passed away, after an illness that lasted a number of weeks. The Reverend W.A. Brailsford officiated at his memorial service, at the Fork River Anglican Church. He is remembered as a quiet, gentle and kind man with red hair and long “whiskers.” |
