Biography of John Cameron, Jr. (1836-1904) |
|
|
The second child of John Cameron and Janet Campbell, John Cameron Jr. was
born on June 16, 1836 at the family home in Kilmorack Parish,
Inverness-shire, Scotland. He was Christened at Kirkhill Parish on
October 14, 1836.
After his mother's death, which occurred sometime between 1836 and 1841, John seems to have lived with relatives, possibly his maternal grandmother Margaret McLeod Cameron. When his father, stepmother and siblings left Scotland for Canada, around 1855, John did not join them. A family story relates that his father insisted upon John joining them, but the young lad was in love with a local girl, Margaret MacKenzie. He hid in a grove of trees long enough to avoid the departing Cameron family and would eventually marry Margaret, in 1863. Although John's sister Margaret did not initially join the family in Scotland, she did leave for Canada in the years to follow, making John the lone member of his family in Scotland. John Cameron Jr. was the local butcher (flesher) in Beauly, Inverness-shire in the years that followed. He passed away on January 16, 1904 and is interred in the old Kilmorack Parish Churchyard. |
