Biography of William Cameron (1863-?) |

|
The youngest child of John Cameron and
Isabella Dallas, William was born on April 5, 1863 in Cobourg,
Ontario. Will was raised in Bruce County, Ontario and remained there
until about 1878, when he accompanied older brothers Albert and Roderick
to Manitoba. The specific date of their departure must have been
after July 4, 1878, since Will's father John made out his will on that
date and mentioned that these very same sons were farmers, living in Bruce
Township. Since Will's brother Roderick, who reportedly left Bruce
with his two brothers, was married in Michigan during March of 1879, it
seems that their departure must have been in the late summer of 1878 (a
detailed summary of their adventures together appears in the biography of
Albert Edward Cameron).
In the aforementioned biography of his brother, it is stated that Will and Roderick left Canada, venturing into the northern U.S. Will parted ways with Roderick in Michigan and purportedly headed east to New York. According to family lore, he became a famous dancing instructor in New York, although it is not clear whether he lived in New York City of somewhere within New York state. A search of New York census records from that era has failed to identify Will's whereabouts. A number of records from his various sibling's family lines state that Will died in Australia. No one is certain why he ventured there. It has been speculated that either his work took him to Australia or that he served on a ship, passing away either in port or while on leave there. Of John Cameron's 11 children, only the fate of his youngest is uncertain. |
